My mother has always wished that I do a Phd. in Fine Arts. Now that prospect is a little daunting for me, and so fate decided something else and I became an art constructor. Every time I create an artwork, I add new elements and love to do experiments in general. In some small way, I feel like this is like work involved in a Phd., so I do a lot of research as I work through each piece of art.
I tried this new portrayal of Maa Durga fusing tradition with innovation and named this “Tanisi” – another name for Durga.
This work is also meant to be an homage to all mothers who nurture and protect their family and loved ones just like Maa Durga.
My research for this work involved learning about the three art forms: Lippan Art, Tanjore Art and Gradient Acrylic painting and figuring out a way to create a cohesive and beautiful medley. I chose bright and warm colours to symbolise strength, power and fearlessness that Durga is renowned for. You can also see a smattering of ceramic, clay and a few other materials I used on round, black wood framed canvas to complete the work.
